    Prepare your workspace

Before you start slicing an onion, the first step is to have everything you need within easy reach. Have you ever started chopping and realized you didn't have a good knife ? Frustrating, isn't it? Make sure you have a stable cutting board and a sharp knife. A sharp knife not only makes for beautiful slices, but it also makes chopping faster and safer.

    Peel the onion

The next step is to peel the onion. First, cut off both ends: the root and the tip. Then, make a shallow cut in the skin and gently peel it off. If the onion is a little tougher than usual, don't worry, a little extra effort and it will all come off easily. You might be wondering: why cut off both ends first? Well, this helps prevent the onion from slipping on the cutting board. It's a small trick, but it makes a big difference!

    Cut the onion in half

Once your onion is peeled, cut it in half lengthwise. Why lengthwise, you ask? Simply because this helps maintain the onion's shape and stabilize it for the next steps. Then, place one half flat on the cutting board. You can already feel yourself gaining confidence, can't you?

    Make horizontal incisions

Here's one of the key steps to finely slicing an onion. Take your knife and make horizontal cuts in the onion, but be careful not to cut all the way through. Leave about 1 cm at the base intact to hold the slices together. At this point, you can already smell the strong aroma of the onion escaping... Try not to cry, we're almost there!

    Make vertical incisions

Next, make vertical incisions in the onion, this time lengthwise. Again, be careful not to cut all the way through the base. The closer the incisions are, the thinner your slices will be. At this point, you'll start to see nice slivers forming. Isn't that satisfying?

    Slice the onion

This is the final step! Hold the onion firmly with your fingers, forming a sort of "claw" to avoid cutting yourself. Use a rocking motion with your knife, back and forth, to slice the onion. There you go, you now have even, uniform slices!

    Use your sliced meat

You now have beautiful sliced onions. What's next? You can add them to a pan for a stir-fry, toss them in a salad, or stir them into a soup for extra flavor. Whatever your dish, you can be sure your sliced onions will add a delicious texture and flavor.

    Conclusion

Finally, chopping an onion might seem simple, but by following these steps, you'll avoid the hassle and the mess. The next time you cook, you'll be faster, more efficient, and most importantly, you'll cry a lot less (literally and figuratively)! So, are you ready to chop onions like a pro?
